Over 100 walking hockey players strode into Stroud’s Stratford Park

Over one hundred players across twelve teams from Stroud, Bromsgrove, Bristol, South Berkshire, Wythall and Cheltenham took part in Stroud Hockey Club’s annual walking hockey festival on Sunday 2nd August 2026 on the Astroturf pitch at Stratford Park Leisure Centre.

On a ferociously hot day and after 4 hours of competitive walking hockey, Stroud and South Berkshire emerged as joint winners.

Teams consisted of 7 players, not of a single sex, and there were two leagues of six teams followed by a knockout section. To increase the likelihood of goals being scored the full sized field hockey goals were used and there were three walking hockey pitches spread across the pitch. Each game had two umpires who made a big contribution to the success of the day.

It was fast, it was furious, it was fun!

The walking hockey arm of Stroud Hockey Club (SWHISH) was founded in 2023 by 5 ex-players of the club. SWHISH now boasts over 35 members, a mixture of ex-players and those who had ‘never played before’. At least 22 players enjoy the weekly sessions on the Astroturf pitch at the Stratford Park Leisure Centre from 10am until 11.15am each Tuesday morning.

New members are always welcome!
